Oral literature is one of the greatest aspects of human cultural tradition, essentially translating the sociocultural existence and experiences of man into different arts and performances for historical accounts recording, recreational pleasures, religious purposes, social interactions and ceremonial engagements. Among the Yoruba, South of the Sahara, Oral literature is a jewel of inestimable values; trademark to Honour, Glory, Prestige and ldentity. Oriki, the label given to a specific genre of Yoruba Oral literature is a string weaved into many poetic diversions, orchestrated with different tonal renditions and approaches according to time and location.
Oriki Yoruba is an entry and exit performances in some Royal Palaces, eulogies to the bravery, riches or philanthropic attributes of the monarch or a specific individual. Oriki Yoruba can be weaved to give a narration of a person, a family, a compound, a town or a linelage in whatever capacity it is been rendered, it is a torch of identity and recognition.
But the movements in time and space brewed by the contemporary issues of the invasion of foreign music and poetry. The use of Oriki Yoruba as a means of poetical engagements is dwindling in our environment and sociocultural activities. To this end therefore, His Royal Majesty, Oba Alayeluwa Adekunle Okunoye, Eburu, lba, essentially established Eburu Adekunle Yoruba Cultural Renaissance, lba to promote and celebrate Oriki Yoruba as a means of advancing and re-enacting Oriki Yoruba in our sociocultural essence and existence.
The Maiden Edition of the project took place at lyaniwura Palace, lba on 12th , December, 2020 with over 20 Yoruba Oriki Chanters, Yoruba monarchs, Government Officials, politicians and the general public. The program also served as a platform to appreciate 5 individuals who had made their landmarks in the field of art and theatre.
